Begin your 10-day journey in Fes — the spiritual and intellectual capital of Morocco and the world's largest living medieval city. Full day guided tour of Fes el-Bali (UNESCO World Heritage Site) with your expert local guide. Morning: the Chouara tanneries (11th-century leather dyeing pools — best viewed from the terrace of a leather shop above), the magnificent Al-Attarine madrasa with its extraordinary carved cedar and zellije tilework, and the Bou Inania madrasa (the most beautiful Merinid-era madrasa in Morocco, with its minaret and astronomical water clock). Afternoon: the Kairaouine Mosque and university (founded 859 AD — the world's oldest continuously operating university), the vibrant spice and dyers' souks, the mellah (Jewish quarter), and the ancient fondouks (caravanserais). Morning departure from Fes (9:00 AM). Drive northwest through the Rif Mountains — dramatic cedar-clad ridges and dramatic viewpoints — to Chefchaouen: Morocco's most photogenic city, its entire medina painted in a dozen shades of blue and white by Jewish refugees from Spain in the 15th century. Arrive early afternoon for maximum exploring time. Wander the legendary blue alleyways of the medina, Uta el-Hammam square with its 15th-century kasbah, the cascades of Ras el-Maa waterfall at the medina's edge, the Spanish mosque above the city for panoramic views. Sunset from the hillside above the blue rooftops — a moment of extraordinary beauty. Overnight in a blue-walled riad in the medina.

Morning free in Chefchaouen — a dawn walk through the empty blue alleys before the crowds arrive is unforgettable. Drive south to Volubilis — the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Marvel at 2,000-year-old mosaics depicting Jupiter, Bacchus, and Diana still vivid in the open air, the triumphal Arch of Caracalla (217 AD), and the forum and basilica of what was once a Roman city of 20,000 people. Continue to Meknes — one of Morocco's four imperial cities, built in the 17th century by Sultan Moulay Ismail who modelled it on Versailles. See the monumental Bab Mansour gate (the largest in North Africa), the Heri es-Souani royal granaries and stables (once housing 12,000 horses), the Place Hedime, and the mausoleum. Return to Fes for a second night — or continue south (itinerary flexible).

Long drive day — but one of the most scenically varied in Morocco. Depart Fes early (7:00 AM). Ifrane: Morocco's alpine resort at 1,665m. Azrou cedar forest: wild Barbary macaques in century-old cedars. Lunch in Midelt. Enter the spectacular Ziz Gorges (50km of sheer red-rock canyon). Cross the vast Ziz Valley palmery. Arrive in Merzouga mid-afternoon. Mount your camel for the iconic sunset trek into Erg Chebbi — Morocco's most dramatic dune sea, 150m high, glowing orange as the sun drops. Third Sahara sunrise. Breakfast in camp. Drive west through Rissani — the ancient walled trading city and birthplace of Morocco's Alaouite dynasty (ruled since 1666). Browse the Thursday souk if timing allows. Through Erfoud (Devonian fossil beds) to the extraordinary Todra Gorges: where 300m-high walls of rose and amber limestone narrow to just 10m wide above a cold, clear emerald river. Walk the canyon floor in silence. Continue through the spectacular Tinghir oasis (50km palmery) along the Dades Valley — the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs" with its ancient earthen towers. Morning walk into the Dades Gorges — extraordinary "Monkey Finger" rock formations. Drive through the Rose Valley (Kelaat M'Gouna): in spring the road is lined with blooming Damascus roses cultivated for rose water and essential oil; visit a rose cooperative. Pass through the ancient Skoura oasis (700-year-old palmery hiding medieval kasbahs). Arrive at Ait Benhaddou — UNESCO World Heritage Site: Morocco's most iconic ksar, a fortified earthen city with six kasbahs rising from the hillside. Morning optional visit to the Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate — a 19th-century earthen palace with 300 rooms and a rooftop walk above the palmery. Begin the dramatic High Atlas crossing via the Tizi-n-Tichka pass (2,260m) — the highest paved road in North Africa. Wind through a landscape of dramatic gorges, Berber villages of pink-ochre earthen houses, and snow-capped peaks. Stop at the summit for panoramic views of ridgelines stretching to the Sahara in one direction and the Atlantic in the other. Descend through cedar forests into the Haouz plain.
